WAGNER: OVERTURES. Barry Tuckwell conducting London Symphony. MCA 25968. It had to come, the world’s foremost horn soloist/conductor directing a program of Wagner’s horn-heavy orchestral music, including overtures to “Rienzi,” “Meistersinger,” “Dutchman” and “Tannhauser,” as well as the Prelude to Act III of “Lohengrin” and “The Ride of the Valkyries.” Over all, these are solid, pleasing performances of impressive sonic depth. What they sometimes lack is the tension, the balance of voices and momentum one gets from Szell and other masters.
