Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

The sardonic mayhem of Orion’s “RoboCop” continued to be a hit at the nation’s theaters over the weekend, with the big metal guy taking the top spot again. But the general summer box- office heat continued over the weekend, with 17 films doing more than $1 million in box-office business. Interestingly, Columbia’s “La Bamba”--a filmed biography of teen rocker Ritchie Valens’ short life--did better at Spanish-language theaters than elsewhere; the 77 theaters debuting the film in Spanish did an average $5,300 per screen, while the 1,174 English-language theaters did only $4,086 per screen.

* Meanwhile, Universal’s “Jaws the Revenge” sank more than 50% below last week’s box-office business. The $2,210 per-screen average is unusually low for second-week figures, especially during the hot summer months.
