Innocent Plea Entered for Deputy D.A.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Wayne Mayer was arraigned in absentia Monday on a misdemeanor petty theft charge in connection with the theft of tools from a truck.
Mayer’s attorney, Peter Hughes, entered an innocent plea for him in San Diego Municipal Court.
Mayer, 41, was given an Aug. 20 date for trial setting. Defendants do not have to appear for arraignment in misdemeanor cases. Mayer--one of the prosecutors in the Sagon Penn case--is free on his own recognizance.
The alleged theft occurred June 14 in the parking lot at De Anza Cove on Mission Bay.
