Former President Jimmy Carter took up a hammer and endured temperatures in the upper 90s as he and hundreds of volunteers launched a five-day mission to build 14 homes for the needy in Charlotte, N.C. The project is part of a house-raising blitz by Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization based in Americus, Ga. By Friday afternoon, Habitat affiliates in 16 other U.S. cities and six foreign countries plan to construct more than 200 homes for the poor.
