Western Digital Profits for Year More Than Doubled

Western Digital Corp., an Irvine-based computer products maker, reported that profits more than doubled to $48.2 million during its 1987 fiscal year from $23.2 million a year earlier.

Sales jumped 54% to a record $462.5 million for the year ended June 30, compared with $300.3 million in fiscal 1986.

For the fourth quarter, the company reported earnings of $15.6 million, up 90% from $8.2 million during the same period a year earlier. Sales for the quarter were $140.3 million, a 59% increase from $88.1 million a year ago.

Western Digital attributed the gains to efforts to broaden its customer base and expand its line of computer components and subsystems, which include circuit boards used to control data storage, video display, printer operation and communication among computers.
