Anaheim Police Arrest Two Men Suspected of Grocery Store Holdup

Two men suspected of robbing an Anaheim grocery store at gunpoint were arrested within minutes in nearby Buena Park by an Anaheim motorcycle officer, police said Tuesday.

Anaheim Police Lt. Jack Parra said the suspects were identified as Robert Saavedra, 32, of Los Angeles and Gustavo Sarmenta, 25, of Cerritos.

Both were arrested without incident in Buena Park after they were seen by Officer David J. Kussman, Parra said.

Police said two men robbed an Alpha Beta market at 1216 Magnolia Ave. about 2:45 p.m. and sped away in a car.

Kussman saw the suspects’ car while he was investigating a traffic accident near Magnolia and the Santa Ana Freeway.

“He recognized it as matching the description of the suspects’ car and followed it westbound on the Riverside Freeway, where it exited on Beach Boulevard in Buena Park,” Parra said.

Kussman waited for backup, which included a police helicopter, before he attempted to stop the car.

The suspects were arrested and booked at Anaheim City Jail on charges of armed robbery.

Parra said a handgun and an undetermined amount of money believed taken in the robbery were recovered.

Bail was set at $50,000.
