New pit bull terriers may not be brought into Santa Clara County and pit bull puppies must be removed from the county after 12 weeks under an ordinance passed by the Board of Supervisors reacting to the fatal mauling of a 2 1/2-year-old boy and other vicious dog attacks. The measure classifies “potentially dangerous dogs” and “dangerous dogs” and requires each of the latter--including every pit bull--to be registered for an annual $100 fee and to be kept in a secure enclosure. An owner must carry $50,000 in liability insurance. The action came despite complaints by pit bull owners that they were being singled out.
