Torrance : School Cuts Called Off
The Torrance Unified School District has reinstated about one-fourth of personnel and programs targeted for elimination last March, when planners were projecting a $2-million budget deficit.
School officials this week said the state budget approved by Gov. George Deukmejian earlier this month provided $760,000 more than expected for the Torrance system.
Trustees approved a plan to use $440,000 of the increased funding to pay for staff training, a reading teacher, five counselors, a full athletic program at the high schools, half of the usual field trips for elementary students and psychological services. The balance of the extra money will be used to pay teacher salary increases that are being negotiated.
“This is not a joyous occasion,” said Trustee William R. Blischke, calling attention to the $1.5 million in proposed cuts that will have to be made to balance the district’s $66.1-million budget for the 1987-88 school year.
The extent of those cuts, he suggested, showed that school officials were not just “crying wolf again” back in March.
