Caltech has received a $1.2-million grant from the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation of Long Beach to conduct a five-year study of the structure of the early universe.
A Caltech spokesman said a major portion of the gift will be used to build the Norris Multi-Object Spectrograph, a fiber-optic instrument that can record the spectrum of light from 100 galaxies simultaneously. Caltech scientists expect to assemble the most detailed picture to date of how the universe has evolved since it originated 10 to 20 billion years ago.
