Local News in Brief : 19-Year-Old Convicted in Death of Old Friend

Roderick Michael Mathewson, 19, of Thousand Oaks, was convicted of second-degree murder in San Diego Superior Court on Tuesday for shooting to death a childhood friend after an argument over a mutual girlfriend.
The body of Cyrus Lam, a freshman at UC San Diego who grew up with Lam in the Thousand Oaks area, was discovered Feb. 2 in a canyon off Pomerado Road. He had been shot once in an arm and twice in the head.
Judge Elizabeth Zumwalt scheduled sentencing for Sept. 9. Mathewson faces a maximum sentence of 16 years to life in state prison.
