Top Turkish officials met with Lyndon H. LaRouche, a political extremist under indictment in the United States on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice, officials said Friday.

A high-ranking official said the government was not aware of the American’s background when he was allowed to meet with Prime Minister Turgut Ozal and Foreign Affairs Minister Vahit Halefoglu on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, we made a mistake,” the official said. “He was not a well-known person here until yesterday (Wednesday).”

A spokesman at the U.S. Embassy said the United States had no connection with the LaRouche visit. He refused further comment.

LaRouche was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston last month, accused of conspiring to stymie federal investigation of financing of his 1984 presidential campaign.
