More than 1,000 teachers who were absent during a one-day strike five months ago have demanded they be paid for the missed day, but the Los Angeles school district has refused, union officials said Friday.

The dispute is over an estimated $166,880 in sick pay and could drag on for years, costing up to $260,000 in legal fees, said Roger Segure, the United Teachers-Los Angeles union official charged with representing the teachers in the dispute.

The 1,043 teachers who have filed grievances against the district are entitled to pay because they were out sick or had doctors’ appointments on Feb. 4, both legitimate absences allowed by the union contract, union Vice President Marv Katz said.

“They had a legitimate reason to be out, and just because they were out on the day of the walkout doesn’t give the district the right to deny them pay,” Katz said.
