Mexican avocados may not be transported through much of the United States because of the danger of agricultural pests, a U.S. Department of Agriculture official said. Frank Cooper, of the department’s animal and plant inspection service, said in Washington that the ruling reverses an earlier one allowing Mexican growers to truck their fruit through California in order to ship it from the state’s ports. Under the new ruling, said Cooper, Mexican avocados headed for foreign markets must be kept far from agricultural areas.
