Central U.S. Heat Wave Persists

The heat wave blamed for 78 deaths kept power plants straining today for a 17th day in the nation’s midsection, but a cold front swinging over the Northern Plains promised some relief later in the week.
Highs in the 90s and high humidity were pushing back into parts of the Northeast, meanwhile, after about a week’s respite.
