As the capital suffered through a muggy 95 degrees Monday, the White House offered a glimpse of cooler times ahead.

Nearly four months in advance, President Reagan’s annual Thanksgiving Day proclamation was distributed. Reagan actually signed it last week, when he videotaped a Thanksgiving Day message.

Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26 this year.

Ben Jarratt, a White House spokesman, said the proclamation historically is released early to allow time for it to circulate to organizations that have special holiday activities.

Even by usual standards, however, he said the proclamation was put out about a month early this year because all the paper work was done and there was no reason to hold it back.
