Marshall’s Slam Carries Dodgers

Mike Marshall drove in five runs, four with a grand slam Monday night, and Orel Hershiser pitched a six-hitter to give the Dodgers a 7-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Hershiser (12-9) struck out eight and walked two in pitching his seventh complete game. Bo Diaz spoiled his shutout bid with a two-run homer in the ninth. Los Angeles has won seven of its last nine games. Cincinnati starter Ted Power (8-6) had a string of seven straight victories over the Dodgers snapped. He allowed nine hits and five runs over five innings.

Marshall’s homer came in the third after Hershiser, Steve Sax and Pedro Guerrero singled. Marshall smacked Power’s first pitch over the center-field wall. It was Marshall’s 12th home run of the year and his fifth career grand slam, tying him with Ron Cey as the club leader since the team has been playing in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers’ lead went to 6-0 in the seventh when Sax reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, continued to third on catcher Diaz’s throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Guerrero.

In the eighth, John Shelby homered to left off Bill Scherrer, his 13th of the year, to boost the Dodgers’ lead to 7-0. The Dodgers got a run in the first when Dave Anderson walked, was awarded second on a balk by Power and scored on a single by Marshall.
