The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee approved legislation to provide $1.3 billion for payments to 60,000 surviving Americans of Japanese descent held in internment camps during World War II. The legislation, approved by voice vote, was sent to the Senate for further action. Under the terms of the bill, each surviving detainee would get $20,000. The bill includes an apology from the federal government to those who were interned.
