AIDS Hospital to Close; $7-Million Loss in One Year
The nation’s first AIDS hospital will be closed due to financial losses of more than $7 million in less than one year.
American Medical International has given formal notice of its intent to close the facility, the nation’s first hospital to focus exclusively on treating those with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, the Houston Chronicle reported today, quoting a letter from an AMI executive.
The Institute for Immunological Disorders opened last September under an agreement between AMI, which operated the hospital, and the University of Texas, which provided physicians to staff it.
The agreement required either side to give 12 months notice to terminate the arrangement if the hospital could not be operated on a sound financial basis.
