YOGA : Exercise for the Ages Keeps Her Circulating

If yoga masters are correct in saying that a person is as young as his or her spine is supple, then Pat Yarbrough of Sherman Oaks should be pushing age 18.

Yarbrough is not 18, but she says she feels like it after teaching yoga for 16 years.

“I was kind of falling apart physically when a friend introduced me to yoga 25 years ago,” Yarbrough said. “It used to take me three cups of coffee to put my makeup on. I would sleep nine hours a day, my heart would palpitate. I was a wreck. Now, I’m up at six for bike riding and some yoga. I work out with weights and I have more energy than when I was 18 years old.”

Yarbrough, 55, teaches 60 to 80 of the more than 84,000 yoga positions. She refers to yoga as a non-competitive science that relaxes and strengthens the body while stimulating its nervous, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, and skeletal systems.

Yarbrough runs a program called “Yoga For Your Life” out of her Sherman Oaks apartment. She teaches two Wednesday night classes and a Saturday morning class. A 90-minute session costs $6.
