President Reagan will give his general views about the testimony at the congressional Iran- contra hearings in a speech Wednesday at 5 p.m. PDT from the Oval Office, an Administration source said late Thursday.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a formal announcement on the speech would come today. It is expected that the speech will be televised nationally.

A White House spokesman, Roman Popadiuk, said late Thursday he could not confirm the report.

The speech would come on the eve of Reagan’s departure for a 25-day vacation. Next Thursday Reagan will fly to North Platte, Neb., where he will speak about his economic proposals.

After his Nebraska stop, the President will continue to California aboard Air Force One. He plans to vacation until Sept. 6 at his ranch near Santa Barbara and also in Los Angeles. The White House has ruled out a presidential news conference before Reagan’s return to Washington.

Earlier this week, presidential spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said Reagan will give his general views of the Iran-contra hearings in the speech but “will not go into every detail.”
