The return of pro football and coverage of the Pan American Games highlight an eventful weekend of sports programming.

In the AFC/NFC Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs kick off the National Football League’s preseason action today at 9 a.m. (7)(3)(10)(42).

However, the NFL exhibition game generating more publicity--and interest--is the one taking place in London on Sunday. Starting at 10 a.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39, NBC will carry the contest between the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Broncos in Wembley Stadium, with Dick Enberg, Merlin Olsen and Ahmad Rashad reporting. The game also will be covered live on KMPC radio (710) beginning Sunday at 9:25 a.m.

Meanwhile, CBS has a highly publicized event of its own getting under way today. The Pan American Games, held before the Olympics every four years, will feature nearly 4,500 athletes from North and South America who will compete in 27 sports ranging from baseball and boxing to swimming and diving.

Opening ceremonies in the 10th edition of the Pan Am Games will be telecast by CBS from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, starting today at noon (2)(8). The three-hour broadcast will be hosted by Brent Musburger.

On Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., CBS will cover several Pan Am events being played at various venues in Indiana, including baseball, basketball, swimming, diving, track and field.

Speaking of baseball, KTLA cameras will be in Seattle for the series between the Mariners and California Angels. The games can be seen tonight at 7 and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on Channel 5.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Dodger fans can catch them facing the Atlanta Braves today at Dodger Stadium. NBC will air the game at 12:15 p.m. (4)(36)(39).

In the midst of all this comes the annual PGA Golf Championship on ABC. The tournament’s final rounds will be televised today at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (7)(3)(10)(42).
