Big Hooray for Hollywood’s 100th Birthday at Art Fest

Share

Stilt creatures, bagpipers, Mickey Mouse and Goofy will roam through Barnsdall Art Park this weekend as part of the Junior Arts Center’s two-day Festival of the Arts. Everything--except the food--is free at this combination art workshop/birthday party for Hollywood’s 100th.

The festivities begin with a brass band concert at 12:30 p.m. today and Sunday in the park’s band shell. Today, eccentric juggler Dick Munday will perform at 1:30 and 2 p.m. Sunday, it’s Jim Gamble’s Puppets at the same time.

Throughout the afternoon, families can join in making a giant transparent mural (plus a small one to take home) and add a tiny sculpture to the huge, paper Happy Birthday Hollywood cake. At 3:30 p.m. the Traveling Energy Band’s creatures on stilts will fan out through the park to surprise visitors. The creatures will then gather for the grand finale of the afternoon: a bagpiper-led parade from which hundreds of message-carrying balloons will be released aloft. The finder of the first balloon will win a new scooter.
