Seal Transplanted to Iceland Killed as Threat to Fish
A seal that was rescued from starvation in the Netherlands only two weeks ago and flown to the Arctic met its end Friday at the hands of angry Icelandic fish farmers.
The seal was one of six flown to northern Iceland from the Netherlands by the Dutch Seal Protection Institute in a widely publicized operation that brought fierce criticism from local fishermen.
Police gave an experienced rifleman permission to shoot the seal, which fish farmers said threatened expensive salmon fry being hatched in the harbor of the northern town of Husavik.
