About 15,000 Protestant militants ignored pleas from Roman Catholic residents and the Irish government and marched near a Catholic neighborhood in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, to celebrate a victory over Catholic forces that had besieged the city in 1689. The annual parade by the Apprentice Boys of Derry fraternal order has regularly triggered sectarian fighting, but no serious violence was reported during the march. Hundreds of police, backed by British army troops, were brought into Londonderry, 85 miles northwest of Belfast, to guard against disorder.
