The bats confiscated Saturday from R.J. Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tim Raines of the Montreal Expos were X-rayed and found to be free of cork, National League umpire supervisor Ed Vargo said.

The bats were returned to the players before Sunday’s game between the Expos and Pirates, Vargo said.

Expo Manager Bob Rodgers asked that Reynolds’ bat be confiscated and checked for cork after the Pirate outfielder hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the Pirates’ 5-2 victory Saturday night.

In the sixth, in an apparent retaliatory move after Raines hit a two-run homer, Pirate Manager Jim Leyland demanded that Raines’ bat also be inspected.
