Rosemead : School District Cuts Budget

The Garvey School District has eliminated busing, two teaching positions and seven other positions in an attempt to cut $2 million from its budget, hit by salary increases, inflation and reductions in state aid.

The 1987-88 budget will be set at $26 million, the maximum the district can spend from known sources of income while maintaining a 3% reserve fund, said John Avila, acting assistant superintendent for business and financial services. He said the district does not know how much additional income, if any, it will receive.

Special education students will still be bused, Avila said, but pupils in kindergarten through third grade who had been bused if they lived more than three-quarters of a mile from school will have to walk, saving the district $75,000.

No teachers will be laid off, but positions now vacant will be eliminated, Avila said. These include the music program, with its teaching position, and a teaching position for a reading program that will be taken over by other teachers. Additional cuts will be made in books and supplies, research and evaluation, maintenance and clerical work, he said.
