The co-owner of a wool mill suffocated after he fell onto a machine and was wrapped in about 800 yards of yarn, police said.

Paul G. Thomas, 47, was operating a pin-wheel dresser machine, which winds woolen yarn from a large spool onto a smaller one, when he fell onto the small spool Tuesday afternoon, state police dispatcher Robert Reichel said.

Thomas was wrapped in hundreds of yards of yarn before employees at the George Thomas & Sons Textile Co. discovered the accident, Reichel said.

“You couldn’t even see the guy at all” inside the yarn, Reichel said. “That’s how fast” the accident happened.

An investigation was continuing, but foul play is not suspected, Reichel said.
