Emperor Hirohito offered prayers for the dead as Japan recalled his announcement 42 years ago of the surrender that ended World War II. Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone joined the emperor at a Tokyo hall, but Nakasone refrained from repeating a controversial visit to Yasukuni Shrine dedicated to the nation’s war dead. About 500 rightists gathered at the Shinto shrine and listened to speeches protesting Nakasone’s refusal to visit. His official visit to the shrine two years ago brought an outcry from some Asian nations accusing Japan of honoring war criminals and reviving Japan’s militaristic past.
