Muslim fundamentalists wanted in the attempted assassination of a former Egyptian Cabinet minister opened fire on security forces who raided their hide-out in a village north of Cairo, killing one officer and wounding three, officials said. Police sources said the three suspects escaped by running through village lanes. One of the suspects was identified as Mohammed Kazem, a member of the Muslim fundamentalist Society for Repentance and Flight From Sin. The attempted assassination Thursday of former Interior Minister Nabawi Ismail, who directed a crackdown on Muslim fundamentalists after the 1981 assassination of President Anwar Sadat, was the fourth attack on Egyptian officials since May.
