San Clemente’s Lutz Reaches Tennis Final
Bob Lutz of San Clemente and Harold Solomon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., advanced to the final of the $40,000 Prudential-Bache Grand Champions of New England tennis tournament Saturday.
Lutz defeated Eddie Dibbs of Miami, 6-4, 7-5, and Solomon eliminated Tom Gullikson of Palm Coast, Fla., 7-5, 6-4, at Ocean Edge Resort and Conference Center.
Lutz has defeated Solomon the past two weeks--in Washington and Chicago--but today’s meeting for the $8,000 first prize will be on clay, the best surface for Solomon’s patient baseline game.
In doubles, Lutz and Stan Smith of Hilton Head, S.C., will meet Tim Gullikson of Boca West, Fla., and Tom Gullikson in today’s $4,000 championship match.
