Madonna turned 29 Sunday surrounded by celebrities and a member of the British royalty in a London night spot. About 500 fans jammed the narrow street outside the Groucho Club in Soho while inside, celebrities awaited an audience with the singer, who was dressed entirely in black. Among those bearing birthday congratulations were Lady Helen Windsor, daughter of the Duke of Kent, a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. Also on the guest list: John Hurt, singer Boy George and famine fund-raiser Bob Geldof.
