“Voyage to the Outer Planets.” Today Home Entertainment. $39.95. For anyone fascinated with space travel, this 54-minute tape, which comes boxed with a color brochure and “space almanac,” is a must. After a brief, stiff introduction by Isaac Asimov, we’re off to Mars, Jupiter, et al. (and, despite the title, the inner planets and our moon too), all gloriously narrator-less. The only sound we hear is music from Gustav Holst’s powerful “The Planets” suite--though computer-readout captions frequently provide information. The images, taken from the Voyager missions and other JPL and NASA material (including some wonderful animation), are brilliantly assembled and stunning. If you’ve hooked up your VCR to your hi-fi system and can hear the Holst in stereo, the result is a unique audio-video experience. Classical buffs, however, may object to the way the music--well played by various, uncredited orchestras--is edited to fit the images rather than the other way around. Information: (213) 278-6490. *** 1/2
