Drivers of Manila’s 60,000 colorful jeepneys went on strike, crippling public transport in much of the Philippine capital in the first major workers’ challenge to President Corazon Aquino. Jeepneys--elongated jeeps converted into highly decorated minibuses--are the country’s main mode of transport. Aquino is under attack for authorizing a 20% increase in the price of gasoline and fuel last week. She refused to rescind the order.
