Religious Images
Once again Times’ cartoonist Paul Conrad has used religious images (Aug. 5) to comment upon the news. This time, it is a verse from the Koran, and a death’s head in the turban of a Muslim religious teacher. The Catholic League deplores this practice.
Whether it is the cross or the Last Supper, the menorah or the Star of David, or the sacred images of Islam, we believe that these belong to the common fund of humankind. They speak to our highest aspirations, and they provide us with what hope we may have for a world of peace and justice. When we fail them--Christian, Muslim and Jew--they are a source of common consolation.
For these reasons, religious images should not be used for political commentary, much less to mock and degrade the most noble religious traditions of the human race.
