Stacy Buck, Jolene Clemens and Daiva Tomkus all made the 1987 roster of the UCLA women’s volleyball team.

Buck is a 6-3 senior from Taft High, Clemens is 6-1 freshman from Agoura and Tomkus is a 6-1 sophomore from Chaminade. Buck and Tomkus are returning letter winners. All are middle blockers on Coach Andy Banachowski’s team, which was 31-10 overall and won the Pacific 10 Conference title last season.

Phil Frye, a former running back at Cal Lutheran and a 1983 graduate of the university, has been added to the football coaching staff. Frye will be a backfield and conditioning coach.

Brian Underwood has been hired as an assistant coach on the CLU basketball team. Underwood formerly coached the junior varsity at Thousand Oaks High.

Jeff Jacobs, 20, of Tarzana, a former All-Southern Section runner at Crespi High and MVP of the UC Santa Barbara cross-country team, was the overall winner of the Ventura 10K road race last Sunday.

Jacobs, who graduated from Crespi in 1985 and will be a junior at UCSB next season, finished in 32:45.

Christian Wallner, 18, of Westlake Village, is competing in the American Continental Young Riders Championships in Southampton, Mass.

The championships include competitors from North and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda. After the event, Wallner, a June graduate of Agoura High, will leave to train and compete with equestrian experts in England.

The Ball Hawks, a girls softball team headquartered in the Valley area, finished third in the Senior Girls National Fast-Pitch Championships for players 18 and under in Lodi last week.

Teri Klement of Sylmar, the City Section 3-A player of the year, and Kim Powers of Burroughs were team members.

Richard Oliver of Studio City and Jill Latham of Panorama City each won medals in The Athletic Congress National Masters Track Championships last week in Eugene, Ore.

Oliver won gold medals in the men’s 50-55 division in the 5K race walk (26 minutes, 32.8 seconds) and 20K walk (1:53:22). In the 50-55 women’s division, Latham won a bronze in the 5K (30.35) and a silver in the 20K (2:14:18). The times were all personal bests for both athletes.
