A Matter of Some Gravity

Gravity-powered vehicles have coasted a long way since 1934, when the All-American Soap Box Derby was first held in Akron, Ohio. The annual event has evolved into a national competition.

But for some young drivers, the more modest neighborhood race still has plenty of allure as evidenced by these racers and fans at a contest Friday at Fullerton’s Craig Regional Park.

About 30 racers representing community centers from several Fullerton parks tested their construction and driving skills on a slight incline.
