Five airliners carrying passengers made emergency or unscheduled landings over the last two days as crew members smelled smoke, spotted fuel leaks or noticed other potentially dangerous conditions, authorities said Friday.

In one of the incidents, an American Airlines jet with 139 passengers en route from Dallas to Los Angeles was forced to make an emergency landing in Albuquerque when one of its two engines failed, an airlines spokesman said Friday.

The plane, a McDonnell-Douglas DC-9 Super 80, is similar to the one that crashed in Detroit on Sunday, killing at least 155 people.

Passengers aboard Flight 35 Thursday said they heard a loud noise about an hour into the flight, and then smoke filled the cabin.
