P.V. Peninsula : Quadriplegic Case Weighed

A state hearing officer is expected to decide within two weeks whether a quadriplegic 6-year-old girl may attend a regular kindergarten class this fall.

The parents of Stephanie Stratford argue that their daughter should be allowed to attend Rancho Vista Elementary School in September with two of her brothers. In spite of their daughter’s disabilities, the parents have said Stephanie is a bright girl capable of learning with non-handicapped children.

Los Angeles County and Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District officials have said that placing Stephanie in a regular classroom is impractical because of the constant medical attention she requires. They say she should attend special classes for handicapped children.
