‘DISAPPEARING PATH’ DESIGN SELECTED

Share

The Newport Beach Arts Commission has selected a project by Santa Barbara landscape architects Cunningham Design Inc. and artists Helen Mayer, Newton Harrison, Paul Hobson and Marcello Petrocelli as the winner of the city’s Inspiration Point Design Competition.

“Disappearing Path” is intended to revitalize the appearance of the erosion-prone coastal lookout point in Corona del Mar.

The first phase of the project is estimated to cost $150,000. “Disappearing Path” was conceived as a multiphase project with an estimated total cost of more than $400,000. There is no timetable or money allocated for the other phases, however.

Plans for the first phase call for an undulating concrete pathway, a plateau area with carved boulders serving as benches and tables, and complete replanting of the site.

Plans to complete the project involve lowering the upper level of the site to create a “sunken plateau” that might include a sort of boulder fountain through which water would be recycled with a hidden mechanism.

The Newport Beach Parks, Beach and Recreation Commission is expected to approve Phase I of the project at its Tuesday night meeting. It would then be submitted for final approval to the Newport Beach City Council, which is expected to take up the matter Sept. 14 or Sept. 28.

A project model is at Unique Homes, 2443 E. Coast Highway, Corona del Mar.
