Governor Will attend a Long Beach Republican Club fund-raiser Sunday.
Assembly Floor Action: Mammograms: Passed and sent to the governor on a 46-13 vote a bill (AB 1305) by Assemblyman Dominic L. Cortese (D-San Jose) to require most health-care plans to pay for mammograms used to detect breast cancer.
Committee Action: Freeway Shooters: The Assembly Public Safety Committee approved a bill (SB 1065) by Senate President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles) to appropriate $950,000 to Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies to increase patrols to apprehend freeway shooters. A 7-0 vote sent the bill to the Ways and Means Committee.
Gangs: The Assembly Ways and Means Committee approved a bill (AB 2013) by Assemblywoman Gwen Moore (D-Los Angeles) to crack down on gang activities by making it a crime for members to knowingly participate in or willfully promote criminal conduct. A 19-2 vote sent the bill to the Assembly floor.
Bill Introductions: Condoms: AB 2683 by Assemblywoman Teresa Hughes (D-Los Angeles) would impose state requirements on the manufacture and sale of condoms in California.
AIDS: ACR 91 by Assemblyman William Filante (R-Greenbrae) would declare October of this year to be AIDS Awareness Month.
Senate Floor Action: Gridlock: Passed and returned to the Assembly for concurrence in amendments on a 37-0 vote a bill (AB 667) by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sepulveda) to allow cities and counties to enact ordinances imposing $50 to $500 fines on motorists who block traffic by entering intersections on a green light but then become trapped when the light turns red.
Drugs: Passed and sent to the governor on a 39-0 vote a bill (AB 397) by Assemblyman Jack O’Connell (D-Carpinteria) to require employers to let employees who wish to participate in drug rehabilitation treatment programs to take time off if it does not impose an undue hardship.
Veterans: Passed and returned to the Assembly for concurrence in amendments on a 30-0 vote a bill (AB 69) by Assemblyman Steve Clute (D-Riverside) to authorize a $510 million bond issue for Cal-Vet home and farm loans to be submitted to the voters at next June’s primary election.
Butterflies: Passed and sent to the governor on a 38-0 vote a bill (AB 1671) by Assemblyman Byron Sher (D-Palo Alto) requesting a state inventory of critical habitat areas used by the Monarch butterfly for winter roosting with recommendations for possible state acquisition of those areas.
Nudists: Passed and sent to the governor on a 21-14 vote a bill (AB 251) by Assemblyman Gerald Eaves (D-Rialto) to allow nudists to serve alcoholic beverages to other nudists in established nudist camp restaurants--if local county sheriffs and county supervisors have no objections.
Committee Action: High School Sex: The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill (AB 2170) by Assemblywoman Teresa Hughes to require the state to develop a videotape to be shown to teen-agers in grades seven to 12 that carries the message, “Its OK to say no to sex.” An 8-0 vote sent the bill to the Senate floor.
