OEUVRE TO SPARE

Doesn’t it seem like Michael Caine is in every movie you see these days? Or Gene Hackman?

This summer’s Caine movies are “Jaws the Revenge,” the just-out “The Whistle Blower” and the also-just-out “The Fourth Protocol.” He has “Surrender” due in October and begins filming next month in London on “The Imposter of Baker Street,” a new Sherlock Holmes yarn.

Hackman’s in “Superman IV” and “No Way Out.” He’s completed “Kid Gloves” and “Bat-21,” both scheduled for early 1988 release, and just began lensing “Full Moon in Blue Water.”

Hackman was too busy to address the question of overexposure. But Caine, attending the Montreal Film Festival, where he’s being honored for the totality of his oeuvre , was happy to refute Outtakes’ claim.

“The actor who’s in everything is Gerard Depardieu,” he insisted. “I’ve never seen a French film he wasn’t in except ‘La Cage aux Folles,’ and he might be in the chorus for all I know.”

Caine added that some of his films aren’t successful, so he can’t possibly be overexposed. “ ‘The Whistle Blower’ appeals to a pretty esoteric group, ‘The Fourth Protocol’ for a wider audience, and hopefully everybody will want to see ‘Surrender.’ ” On questions about “Jaws the Revenge,” he refused to bite.
