The Joys of Being Clubbable

Share

As a Jonathan Club non-resident member’s wife (not living in the environs of Los Angeles County), I would like to thank you for Kathleen Hendrix’s delightful article (“Male Bastion Bows to Its New Patrons,” Aug. 21).

It has been a little-known fact that the club’s facilities have been used by women for some time and I thank Hendrix for pointing this out. As owner of my own interior design business, it is necessary to make trips to Los Angeles design sources, and I have become a regular overnighter, staying in the charming rooms decorated by Logan Brown, as have my clients, who come from varied backgrounds. We have always received the finest of service in the most gracious manner possible.

This is not to say that I don’t remember the “old” days and that there wasn’t a tad of resentment about using the “Ladies” elevator or being the only woman seated in the third floor dining room during a luncheon meeting with business associates. I do remember those days and they are history.

The Jonathan Club’s facilities are simply grand! The building is magnificent (if not awesome) in its architectural detail. As a native-born Southern Californian, I cannot help but revere the building’s historical significance as an example of bygone days.

I know I am honored, privileged and welcome to walk freely through the doors of the club and have been for some time. I felt strongly it was time to air these truths.
