Two San Diego-area Boy Scouts were listed in good condition at the UC San Diego Medical Center Burn Center Monday, two days after they were badly burned by a gas stove explosion near Tecate.

Troy Wynn, 15, suffered second-degree burns over 10% of his body, and was still in intensive care late Monday afternoon after being upgraded to good condition Monday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. Jason Guffey, 17, suffered second-degree burns over 15% of his body.

A third Boy Scout, Mike Downey, 13, was treated and released at UCSD Medical Center early Sunday morning.

The boys were on an international “camporee” in Mexico near the border town of Tecate when the accident occurred, said Ron Brundage, executive director of the Boy Scouts’ San Diego County council. Downey and Guffey, decided late Saturday night to heat some water to make hot chocolate. Guffey was engulfed in a ball of fire when the propane gas stove malfunctioned and exploded, Brundage said.

Wynn was in a nearby tent that was scorched by the fire, Brundage said.

A Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was a counselor on the trip used his DEA radio to contact authorities in Los Angeles, who helped open the Tecate border crossing, which closes at midnight.

The boys arrived at the UCSD Medical Center around 3 a.m. Sunday, Brundage said.
