Dear Harold: Get the Message?

There wasn’t much chance that Harold--or anyone else for that matter--was going to miss these notes. Printed in heavy black ink on hot pink paper, they were on every elevator, wall, door, escalator and post in a downtown Oklahoma City concourse. “Harold,” the notes began, “you inconsiderate wimp. This is the LAST time you will forget our anniversary. Don’t bother coming home--the locks have been changed. See you in court, Rachel.” Pedestrians and workers said they didn’t know who the former lovebirds are, but suspected he, at least, must work downtown. “I’ve found six of them,” said David Phillips, a tunnel security guard, of Rachel’s scathing missives. “I wish I could leave them up, but you aren’t allowed to put up things in the tunnels without permission. She seems like a woman with some style. I’d like to meet her.”

--It sounded like the kind of criticism regularly leveled against American television, but the setting was China and the complainant a descendant of Confucius. His beef was with “Rhapsody of Confucius,” a play about the 6th Century B.C. philosopher that’s currently on the boards in Chufu in East China. “We can hardly see the greatness of Confucius from the play. There were too many love scenes between Confucius’ daughter and one of his disciples,” Prof. Kung Lingpeng, a 76th-generation descendant of the great sage, told the official China News Service. Playwright Zhang Xun said he had hoped the musical, praised by some critics for its true-to-period choreography and music, would become a classic. But he waxed philosophical about criticism of his play. “I’ve already changed the script eight times,” he said. “I’m willing to change it again.”

--That sound is hearts breaking around the world. Tom Selleck, Marlboro man and private eye extraordinaire, has married his longtime girlfriend, Jillie Mack, his publicist has confirmed. “He kept it a secret for a whole month,” publicist Esme Chandlee said. “He’s very private about all of that.” The wedding was Aug. 7 somewhere near Lake Tahoe, but details were kept strictly confidential, Chandlee said. Mack, 28, whom Selleck met in London while she was in “Cats” and he was filming “Lassiter,” has also appeared in an episode of the long-running “Magnum P.I.,” in which Selleck zoomed in his Ferrari to stardom. It’s the second marriage for Selleck, 42, who reportedly remains close to his first wife, model Jacqueline Ray, and to her teen-age son from a previous marriage.
