Orange County Roundup : Untouchables Head Soccer Field

The North Huntington Beach Soccer Club will play host to the ninth annual North Huntington Beach Invitational tournament, a three-day event beginning Saturday at 8 a.m.

The tournament features 183 teams--including more than 80 from outside California--playing in five age-group divisions, from 10-and-under (Division 5) to 19-and-under (Division 1), in boys’ and girls’ sections.

Matches will be played on 10 fields in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, including Ocean View High School, the tournament headquarters.

The North Huntington Beach Soccer Club, a member of the Coast Soccer League, organizes 10 teams in the Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley area.

The club’s premier team, the Untouchables, was formed as a boys’ 10-and-under team in 1979.

Now the Untouchables are a 19-and-under team, with six of the original 16 players remaining on the roster. They are sweeper Rodney Barker, forward Darin Fishman, midfielder Scott Holt, fullback Mike Sandel, fullback Mike Lapper and forward John Coggins.

This summer, the Untouchables have won the San Jose Campbell Cup, the Mission Viejo Invitational, and, last weekend, the Orange Tournament. They are considered favorites in their division this weekend.

Some of the best professional soccer players in the world will meet Saturday night as Brazil challenges Mexico in the Heroes Cup, an all-star exhibition match at Santa Ana Stadium.

Both teams feature rosters of players with World Cup experience.

The match begins at 7:45 p.m., with gates opening at 6.

All five Orange County community college football teams will participate in scrimmages this weekend.

Orange Coast College plays Santa Monica at 1 p.m. today at OCC, and Rancho Santiago plays El Camino at Santa Ana Stadium tonight at 6. Golden West plays at Citrus at 7 tonight.

Fullerton plays at Saddleback at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Independent Flag Football League, which plays on Saturdays at Fountain Valley Recreation Center, is looking for players, teams and officials interested in joining the league for play on Sundays. Teams, with a minimum of 12 players and a maximum of 20, are for players age 18 and over. For information, call Ed Fogel at 848-5101.

The Orange County Women’s Soccer Club is in search of women 18 and over to compete in its open division. A minimum of five years’ competitive soccer experience is necessary. For information, call Bob Kessen at 536-8189.

The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team will play the alumni tonight at 6 in Irvine’s Crawford Hall. The Anteaters open the season Tuesday in the All-Cal tournament at the Bren Center.

The All-Cal tournament features teams from UCLA, California and UC Santa Barbara, all of which are ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Cal State Fullerton, the defending Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. co-champion, will open its soccer season Saturday and Sunday at the Cosmopolitan Soccer Tournament at the University of Portland.

The Titans, 4-1 in the PCAA and 8-11-2 overall last year, have seven returning starters, including two all-conference midfielders--Tom Atencio and Chuck Smoot. Coach Al Mistri is 62-48-14 in six seasons at Fullerton.

Fullerton returns for a home match against San Diego State Sept. 11 and will play the University of San Diego on Sept. 13.

The UC Irvine men’s and women’s soccer teams begin their regular season this weekend.

The women play San Francisco State at Cal Poly Pomona Saturday and Chico State at home Monday at 1 p.m. The men play San Jose State Sunday at 2 p.m. at Irvine.

The Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team plays its season opener against Georgetown University in the first round of the Hofstra University tournament today at 2 p.m. at Hempstead, N.Y.

The Titans, who finished 7-28 overall and 1-17 in the PCAA last season, hope to boost their squad with freshmen Kim Brower, a setter from Capistrano Valley High School, middle blocker Jenni Hurt (Torrance) and outside hitter Keri Pier (Hueneme).

Sophomore hitter Susan Herman and senior captain Alisa DeNapoli are the team’s top returnees.
