Two trains carrying up to 300 passengers collided Friday on the southern Algarve resort coast, killing at least five people, officials said.

Fire Chief Joao Nogueira said one of the trains crashed into the rear of the other near Olhao, 185 miles southeast of Lisbon. The trains were going in opposite directions between Faro and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, a major crossing along the Spanish border.
