It was greatly amused at Rick Sherwood’s defense of Sean Penn (“Hooray for Hollywood, 1947,” Aug. 30).

How can he ask if Penn is the Bogart of today? All the former stars mentioned in the article had class, something sadly missing from today’s younger players, and especially in Penn, who does possess in abundance all the traits, “short fuse, arrogant attitude, foul mouth, fistfights, egocentric outlook, and bad-boy image.” Added to those, he is unattractive and petulant.

No films of his will be shown 40 years from now, the test of a real star.
