‘Temp’ Careers

Share

The Aug. 23 story, “Helping Firms for Short Term Is a Big Industry,” regarding the boom in the temporary service industry, failed to note one of the most serious consequences of this boom: the often irreparable damage to the careers of those who, lured by the temptation of the fast buck and flexible work schedules, depart from career paths.

Later, they will try to re-enter the permanent market, only to find that employers will view them as job-hoppers, people lacking in commitment and staying power and poor employment risks, likely to leave when a better paying, more flexible job comes along.

As a result, these “temps” will find themselves at a serious competitive disadvantage when vying for desirable career positions.
