The former president of Cuba’s Civil Aeronautics Institute has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for embezzlement and misappropriating public funds, the official news agency AIN reported on Saturday.

Luis Orlando Dominguez was arrested in June on charges he used his position for personal benefits and privileges, including obtaining several cars and a beach house near Havana.

Dominguez, a former secretary general of the Young Communist League, is believed to be the highest government official tried and sentenced since Cuban authorities began an anti-corruption campaign last year.

Dominguez will also have to pay an indemnity of $342,000 to the institute.

Two accomplices, Jose Dalmau Alarcon and Jose Maique Diaz, who were arrested and tried with him, were sentenced to eight and seven years in prison, respectively.

AIN gave no further details of the trial, which took place on Aug. 28-29, and no details of the offenses of the two other men.
