Detroit had by far the highest rate of youth homicide and manslaughter among large U.S. cities last year, the Detroit News reported. The paper put the murder-manslaughter rate at about 15 of every 100,000 children 16 and younger in the city. It said that Los Angeles was second, with a rate of about 8 per 100,000. For 1986, the deaths of 47 children 16 or under in Detroit were classified as homicide or willful manslaughter. All but one of the victims were black, most were boys, and a majority died of gunshot wounds. Others in the top 10, in descending order: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego.
